P27268 Beverley Nurses’ and Matron’s Quarters
Overview
The Heritage Council of Western Australia is currently considering whether Beverley Nurses’ and Matron’s Quarters should be included in the State Register of Heritage Places. The Council believes the place is likely to be of State cultural heritage significance due to its association with the changing nature of regional nursing accommodation in the post-war period of development, and the shift from hospital-based nursing training to tertiary based training.
Constructed in 1963, the Nurses’ Quarters, is also an example of the work of notable WA architect, Raymond Jones, who was well-known for his Public Works Department, ecclesiastical, residential, and commercial designs in Western Australia. The functional design of the Nurses’ Quarters demonstrates the importance of nurses’ accommodation whilst its size demonstrates the increased numbers of nurses required during this period of growth.
Registration will celebrate this story and acknowledge the contribution of nurses, working women and the architecture of Raymond Jones to Western Australia.
