P4794 Mount Henry Bridge
Overview
The Heritage Council of Western Australia is currently considering whether P4794 Mount Henry Bridge (constructed 1982; 2007) should be included in the State Register of Heritage Places. The Council believes the place is likely to be of State cultural heritage significance for its association with the growth of the Perth metropolitan area in the latter part of the 20th century, commencing with the 1955 Stephenson-Hepburn Plan and the subsequent 1963 Metropolitan Region Scheme.
As the last major bridge designed inhouse by the Main Roads Department, Mount Henry Bridge is a vital component of the Kwinana Freeway. It is valued for its innovative design including the cantilevered pedestrian walkways and cycleways under the bridge deck on each side which separates vehicle and pedestrian traffic, and for employing a construction method not previously used in Western Australia.
As a prominent landmark, Mount Henry Bridge is simple and elegant in form, and makes a prominent contribution to the Perth metropolitan area and the Canning River
