Consultation closes 3 November 2026

A significant development application for a power station in the Shire of Dandaragan has been received by the Western Australian Planning Commission (WAPC) under Part 11B of the Planning and Development Act 2005.

The application proposes a gas-fired power station and supporting infrastructure at 10585 (Lot 1001) Brand Highway, Cataby. The proposal is also known as the Cataby Power Station.

The development consists of the following elements:

  • Combined total of up to 500 MW of energy production, comprising:
    1. one 200MW gas turbine generation unit and associated plant and equipment
    2. 15 x 20MW reciprocating engine units and associated plant and equipment
  • Incidental infrastructure and facilities
  • Gas supply pipeline connection and metering infrastructure
  • High voltage electrical switchyard and grid connection infrastructure
  • Access roads, hardstand areas, water detention ponds and security fencing.

The application from GHD on behalf of Alinta Energy (Cataby) Pty Ltd is required to be advertised to seek public comments and is open until 3 November 2026.

The development is valued at $1 billion.

Local residents: The application documents can be inspected at the Shire of Dandaragan Administration Centre, 69 Bashford Street, Jurien Bay, 9am-4pm weekdays for the duration of the submission period.

Planners from the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage will be available in Dandaragan and Jurien Bay on 14 and 15 October 2026 for meetings with residents (up to two residents per meeting). You can book a meeting here.
